All Language is Hyperbolic
07.26 / No.91

Even the most technical boring prose completely devoid of style and metaphor. Even the most instructive and descriptive bit of copy you or I could imagine or create. Even a passage that seems to be as far from hyperbole and creativity as we are from the Sun.

All language is hyperbolic because our ability to communicate that which we understand is limited by our ability to understand which we communicate. And since language, the tool we use for communication, is built upon a version of reality shrunken to fit within the confines of our five senses, we will never be close to describing things as they truly are.

Which means that even if our model of the universe continues to grow, the version larger than what we naturally perceive will always be foreign. Once advanced technologies are taken away, fundamental components of the universe like subatomic particles, quantum mechanics, and thermal dynamics become imperceptible to us.

But even if we did posses a perfect interpretation of reality—would language even be a permissible vessel to communicate its true essence? Wouldn’t cramming the infinite expanse of the known and unknown universe into the small and constrained bounds of language be an intrinsic impossibility? Yes, I think it would be.

So what this all means is that speaking in hyperbole—describing things not as they are, but as we perceive them to be is not optional—and should not be avoided.

If we are to ever cross the chasm of misunderstanding created by false perceptions of reality we’ll need every tool at our disposal.

If we are to ever reach a point of mutual understanding, we’ll have to get off our high-horse of “correctness” and learn to use exaggeration, slang, memetic devices, acronyms, descriptive words, lush illustrations, and anything else that helps us pierce one another’s contextualized perception of the way things are.
