Most waterfall hikes essentially function as a means to an end. You traverse what is usually a steep single pass trail and endure the grueling experience for what you hope to be an epic pay off.
What makes Glenn Falls different though is that there is no “grand reveal” you must peace the view together by stopping at overlooks and keeping an eye out for camouflaged spur trails. In stark contrast to most Appalachian waterfall hikes — once you reach the top or bottom you’re greeted only with welcome signs, visitor information, and parking lots.
As I was reflecting on this short trip, I couldn’t help but fashion my experience into a metaphor. A reminder to find joy in the journey. An opportunity to re-learn that the path you travel can be the reward in and of itself. An exercise in choosing to see the road ahead not as an obstacle to be overcome, but something worth enjoying in and of itself.
