Nothing is Neutral
06.26 / No.75

Is a double-entendre. The most obvious meaning is that nothing we interact with is neutral and that the impact of whatever we come across is determined throughout the course of our interaction.

The media we consume is not neutral. The hobbies we pursue are not neutral. The place we call home is not neutral.

But the less obvious meaning is that the concept of “nothing” is, itself, neutral. That “nothing” is literally neutrality incarnate.

“Did you vote for this or that politician?”
“I voted for nothing.”

“Did you watch this movie?”
“I watched nothing.”

“Did you eat this for lunch?
I ate nothing”

So while it’s true that in practice, we often mean to use the former, we should learn to occasionally use the latter. Sometimes the answer is not this or that, but the neutrality made possible when we instead choose nothing.
