On Memorizing Talks
06.26 / No.78

Before I begin I’d like to clear the air. I did not bother to commit to memory every word which you are about to hear. I wrote this essay, and rewrote it, and wrestled with its contents for dozens of hours over dozens of weeks. This effort should be enough to satisfy the skeptical critics among us.

If you’d like to be presented something whose script has been completely memorized watch a movie, sitcom, or TEDTalk. I have better things to do than practice hand motions and commit to memory emphatic moments. Either the contents of this essay will resonate, or they will not. I have no plans of greasing the wheels of connection and understaffing through providing a spectacle. I have placed all my efforts upon refining and crystalizing the subject which I plan to communicate.

I am an essayist, a writer, and a designer, not an entertainer. If this presentation ignites a spark which you feel compelled to follow then I have done enough.

Now, on to the talk.
