Taming the Beast
03.25 / No.13

While artists have many directives, a core component of our calling is found in taming the beast of our creative inclinations. On the surface, taming the beast may sound restrictive (or just weird) but in reality, it’s nothing more (or less) than focusing our creative efforts, which eventually becomes the mechanism by which we learn what to do with our wild ideas. In effect, taming the beast enables us to become practiced creatives, as opposed to frantic artists.

Tragically, taming the beast is not a one time occurrence. Much like finding balance, focusing our creative inclinations is an ongoing and ever-changing formula. Regardless of how practiced we are, the process of creating order from chaos will (likely) never become a consistently easy-going endeavor.

Thankfully, each time we work on our ideas (no matter how big or small) we become further equipped for the next wild thought or crazy dream. Over time, our minds and bodies become used to the work involved in focusing our creative inclinations. With enough practice we learn how to pursue our ideas despite their wild nature and gain a skill essential to our creative journey.
